Assignment 1 (30%)
Choose a current phenomenon in digital consumerism and online culture and explain how we can think about it in a critical way. This digital phenomenon can be anything, but some helpful examples can be: online trolling, twitter beef, the rise of cleanfluencers, online misogyny and harrassment, cyberbullying, TikTok influencers, Netflix shows like Emily in Paris, The Bold Type or Black Mirror, cost of living crisis online and other.
Create a max 10-minute podcast (equivalent to 1500words) in which you will be talking about this digital phenomenon in a critical way.
You are required to frame your topic of choice with theory. You are encouraged to use theories from the module but you should be supporting your work with further independent research and study.
Your podcast should be a simple one-person podcast, recorded, that has a beginning, a middle and an end, just like an essay assignment would have an introduction, a main body, and a conclusion. You can add dramatic effects if you want, like non-copyright sounds or music but this is only optional.
There are free recording and editing software you can use like Audacity, but you can simply use any device to record your podcast.
The podcast should present your research on your topic, and you should be referring to the theory/theories you have chosen and other academic literature to support your critical thinking. In other words, you need to research your topic and appropriate relevant literature before you start writing the script for
your podcast.
You are encouraged to write a script to present your podcast in appropriate language, with a clear argument and without being side-tracked (the script should not be submitted as part of the assignment).
